Kyoto City Zoo

The Kyoto City Zoo is located in a corner of Okazaki Park. It was first opened in 1903, during the Meiji era, making it the second oldest zoo in Japan after Ueno Zoo. After a major renovation in 2015, the zoo celebrated its 120th anniversary in 2023. It continues to be a beloved place of relaxation for Kyoto residents of all ages.

The zoo features unique exhibits like the "African Savanna," where giraffes and zebras coexist; "Gorilla House," where gorillas interact with a setup resembling a tropical rainforest; and "Elephant Forest," showcasing the bathing habits and lifestyle differences of Asian elephants.
Notable attractions include the "Wild World," where visitors can observe powerful animals like tigers walking overhead and endangered species like the Tsushima leopard cat. The "Fairyland" houses familiar animals like goats and guinea pigs.

The zoo also boasts an animal library with about 7,000 books, including picture books and photo collections, coupled with a cafe for a relaxing break. In spring, the zoo becomes a popular cherry blossom viewing site. Conveniently located near tourist spots like Heian Jingu Shrine and Nanzen-ji Temple, it's a favorite among both locals and tourists.
