Quietly tucked away in the satoyama countryside of Minamiuonuma, Niigata, Satoyama Jujo is a hot spring ryokan created by Jiyujin magazine editor-in-chief and creative director Juro Iwasa. With the concept of a stay full of experiences and discovery, it proposes a lodging experience packed with attention to detail, from the on-site design to the interior, tableware, and bedding.

The building, the first lodging facility to receive the Good Design Award BEST100, is a renovation of a 150-year-old traditional Japanese home. There are three room types—mountain-view rooms overlooking Mount Makihata, forest-view rooms to enjoy the woodland scenery, and standalone annex rooms—and some luxurious rooms also come with an open-air bath. The breathtaking open-air bath with views of Mount Makihata and the mountains along the Joshinetsu border is also highly praised.

Dishes served at the main dining room, Sanae Kyo SANABURI, focus on vegetables sourced from farmers across Niigata. The menu also features Minamiuonuma-grown Koshihikari rice, sake, fermented foods, and more, letting you experience Niigata’s rich food culture.
