Irago Cape Lighthouse
A beautiful lighthouse that protects maritime safety from the southernmost tip of Aichi Prefecture.
A beautiful lighthouse that stands on Irago Cape, the southernmost tip of Aichi Prefecture. Since it was built in 1929, it has watched over maritime safety. It was also selected as one of the “50 Best Lighthouses of Japan,” and the contrast between the blue sea and the white lighthouse is striking. The view at dusk, when the sea turns red, is especially romantic. Along with Koijigahama Beach to the east of Irago Cape Lighthouse, it has been designated a “Sacred Place for Lovers” and is also popular as a date spot.
On clear days, you can see Kamishima Island, the setting of Yukio Mishima’s novel The Sound of Waves, and even as far as Toba in Mie Prefecture. A walking path circles Irago Cape, letting you enjoy a stroll while taking in spectacular views of Ise Bay and Mikawa Bay. Near the parking area, you’ll also find many places to eat where you can enjoy seafood dishes such as the local specialty, oversized clams.
To reach Irago Cape, you can take a bus from Mikawa-Tahara Station on the Toyohashi Railroad, or take a ferry from Toba Port in Mie Prefecture.
