Last update :

Located in the Matsudai area of Tokamachi City, Niigata, Matsudai “NOHBUTAI” Field Museum is a field museum where around 40 artworks are scattered along a route of about 2 km stretching from Matsudai NOHBUTAI, the base facility designed by the Dutch architect group MVRDV, to Matsudai Castle on the mountaintop. It is also known as one of the base sites of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field. By exploring both the outdoor works and the indoor exhibitions, visitors can experience contemporary art alongside snow-country farming culture and the landscapes of terraced rice fields and satoyama.

On the second floor of Matsudai NOHBUTAI, the restaurant Echigo Matsudai Satoyama Shokudo serves dishes made with local ingredients. Another highlight is that the dining space itself is the artwork “Café Reflet” by the French artist Jean-Luc Vilmouth.

Programs are also held in the surrounding rice paddies and fields, where visitors can experience nature through activities such as gathering wild mountain vegetables and playing in the snow. Visitors can experience not only art, but also food and agriculture, the satoyama landscape, and local life.
