Agatsumakyo Gorge is a nationally designated scenic spot in Higashiagatsuma-machi, Gunma, and is also known as the “Yabakei of Kanto.” Stretching about 3.5-4 km along the Agatsuma River, the gorge runs through a canyon formed as the river carved through volcanic lava. With beautiful seasonal scenery such as fresh greenery and autumn leaves, it is beloved as a destination for hiking and nature observation.

Within the gorge, ten highlights known as the Agatsumakyo Top Ten are scattered throughout. The terrain is full of variety, from Byobu-iwa, where six rocks about 200 m high stand like a folding screen, to Haccho Kuragari, the narrowest section of the river, and Shin Horai, a uniquely shaped rock known as Sennin-kutsu (Hermit’s Cave). Mid to late April for mitsuba-tsutsuji azaleas, May for fresh greenery, and late October to early November for autumn leaves are especially good times to visit. With ever-changing terrain including unusual rocks and waterfalls, the powerful landscape woven by rugged rock faces and clear streams is truly impressive.

Nearby is Agatsumakyo Roadside Station. The facility includes the day-use hot spring Tengu no Yu, which is also appealing for relaxing and resting your body. It is a popular day-trip destination that pairs a nature walk in Agatsumakyo Gorge with a hot spring.
