This aquarium at Kagoshima Port looks out across Kinko Bay to the magnificent sight of Sakurajima, the symbol of Kagoshima, right in front of you.
Its exhibits focus mainly on creatures that live in Kagoshima’s waters, including Kinko Bay and the Nansei Islands, with about 10,000 specimens from around 800 species on display. Highlights include the Kuroshio Large Tank, the only exhibit of its kind in Kyushu, featuring whale sharks as well as fish that migrate on the Kuroshio Current, such as tuna and bonito.

Located in Kagoshima City, Hirakawa Zoological Park is built around the concept of “a zoo where you can learn and play in fun ways.”
It keeps 827 animals from about 125 species, offering the chance to see a wide variety of creatures, from large mammals such as giraffes and lions to birds and reptiles.
Among them, the koalas, the largest number kept anywhere in Japan, are the zoo’s most famous stars.
A major attraction is the walk-through exhibit, where you can observe them up close as they eat eucalyptus leaves and sleep.

Located within Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park at an elevation of 680 m, this park is a scenic spot with panoramic views of Kinko Bay and Sakurajima, and on clear days, even Mt. Kaimon.
The vast grounds feature a wide variety of attractions, including an 18-hole putting golf course, a ground golf area with a 70 m diameter natural grass field, and a fancy slider where you ride a sled down a slope of about 40 m.

This park is located Approx. a 15-minute walk from Sakurajima Port Ferry Terminal.
The lush grounds, covering about 5 hectares, are lined with play equipment modeled after seven kinds of dinosaurs as well as animals such as lions and tigers.
Among them, the giant slide, standing 12.5 m high and 50 m long, is especially impressive.
The park also has open spaces and walking paths, where you can enjoy seasonal flowers such as cherry blossoms in spring and hydrangeas in early summer.

Located in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, Uenohara Jomon no Mori is a park where visitors can experience life in the Jomon period (from around 18,000 BC to around 300 BC).
Centered around the nationally designated historic site Uenohara Ruins, the park includes several facilities, such as a reconstructed village lined with pit dwellings and an exhibition hall introducing Jomon culture through excavated artifacts and videos.

Located in the southeastern part of the Satsuma Peninsula, Lake Ikeda is the largest lake in Kyushu, with a circumference of 15 km and a depth of 233 m.
It is a caldera lake formed by volcanic activity more than 5,000 years ago, and it is said to have taken its current shape after six eruptions, including those in the surrounding area.
Mt. Kaimon, affectionately known locally as “Satsuma Fuji,” is a must-see, and the view of its majestic form across the lake is especially striking.

Located on a small hill overlooking the city, the park’s Approx. 800 cherry trees come into beautiful bloom from late March to early April.
During cherry blossom season, Tadamoto Park Sakura Festival Week is usually held, with a variety of food stalls appearing each year. Lanterns line the Approx. 2 km stretch of cherry trees, and when they light up after dark, the scene takes on a charm quite different from the daytime view.

This observation deck stands on a small hill in a lava field formed by lava flows from the major eruption of Sakurajima in 1946. It is located partway along a walking trail of Approx. 1 km laid out across the lava field, and is a scenic spot where you can see Sakurajima’s Minamidake peak and Kinko Bay up close.
The area around the deck features a distinctive landscape of rugged lava with plants such as Japanese black pine taking root.
The crater of Minamidake, which continues active volcanic activity today, is especially impressive, as it not only sends up plumes of smoke from time to time but can also produce roaring sounds and explosion noises accompanying eruptions.

Sakurajima Visitor Center is located Approx. a 10-minute walk from Sakurajima Port Ferry Terminal.
Through exhibits such as videos and dioramas, it introduces Sakurajima and Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park, including Sakurajima’s designation as part of the Sakurajima-Kinkowan Geopark.
The center is made up of seven sections. With a wide variety of exhibits, including a theater room with a 200-inch large screen and an eruption video corner where visitors can experience eruptions through powerful footage and sound from the Showa Crater in the 2010s, when it erupted several hundred times a year, it offers a detailed look at the history and nature of Sakurajima and its surrounding area.

This seaside park looks out toward Mt. Kaimon, one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains, with the vast East China Sea stretching out before it.
At low tide, you can walk across the rugged reefs and head out close to the offshore area, where it is fun to spot small fish and shellfish swimming in the shallows.
One especially interesting feature is a spot where the reef has eroded in a circular shape and seawater collects inside. It is called the “sea pool,” and a local legend says it was once the entrance to the Dragon Palace.
