A high moor where you can enjoy seasonal flowers and spectacular views of the Hakuba Sanzan mountains.

This natural park sits at an elevation of Approx. 1,900 meters and is home to one of Japan’s leading high moors. It was formed over many years as ponds appeared on flat land created by the volcanic activity of Mt. Hakuba Norikura, and dead vegetation repeatedly turned into peat in the cold climate instead of fully decomposing.

Wooden boardwalks run through the park, allowing visitors to walk the full Approx. 5.5-kilometer circuit in about 3.5 to 4 hours, while a short course that takes about 1 hour is also available. Along the way are highlights such as Mizubasho Marsh, Tenbo Marsh, Ukishima Marsh, and Watasuge Marsh.

Another draw is how the scenery changes with the seasons. In May, the area becomes a vast snowy landscape, in June flowers such as Asian skunk cabbage and Japanese glaucidium come into bloom, and in summer a wide variety of alpine plants colors the marshlands. In autumn, brilliant fall foliage spreads across the area in red and yellow from the grass leaves onward, followed by the distinctive scenery created by Erman’s birch trees. A sweeping panorama of the Hakuba Sanzan mountains also awaits, offering breathtaking views.

Be sure to stop by the visitor center, which introduces the plants and animals found in the park, as well as the Historic Former Tsugaike Hut Museum, where you can learn about the history of mountain climbing in the area.
