Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu Park

A park on a hill with spectacular views of Matsushima, one of Japan’s Three Scenic Views.

Last update :

This park sits on a hill with sweeping views of Matsushima, one of Japan’s Three Scenic Views alongside Amanohashidate in Kyoto Prefecture and Miyajima in Hiroshima Prefecture. Its name is said to come from the poet-monk Saigyo Hoshi, who was active from the late Heian period to the early Kamakura period and gave up his trip to Matsushima after losing a Zen dialogue to a boy he met under a large pine tree during his travels.

Viewing spots are scattered throughout the park, with the view from the Byakui Kannon Observation Deck being especially recommended. Picture-perfect scenery awaits, including the green islands floating in Matsushima Bay, Fukuurabashi Bridge stretching to Fukuura Island, and sightseeing boats crossing the water. The park is also known as a famous cherry blossom spot, where many Somei Yoshino cherry trees bloom in spring, and around April each year, you can enjoy the beautiful contrast of cherry blossoms and Matsushima Bay. Spacious walking paths are also well maintained, making it a great place for a relaxing stroll.

The park also has the glass-walled café le Roman, where you can enjoy coffee and sweets while taking in the beauty of the many islands through the windows.
