Myotokuzan Kegonji Temple (Suzumushidera Temple)

A soothing Zen temple filled with the sound of bell crickets all year round.

Last update :

This historic temple was founded in 1723 by the scholar-monk Hotan Shonin. It is also known as “Suzumushidera Temple” because Approx. 5,000 to 10,000 adult bell crickets raised on the temple grounds fill the temple with their chirping throughout the year.

When visiting, guests first enjoy tea and a sweet in the guest hall while listening to an Approx. 30-minute Buddhist talk called the “Suzumushi Sermon” in a room filled with the sound of crickets. The talk is delivered with humor, making it easy to enjoy in a relaxed way. After calming your mind with the sermon and the sound of the crickets, stroll through the garden and finish by offering a prayer to the Jizo known as “Kofuku Jizo.” Kofuku Jizo is the only Jizo statue in Japan that wears straw sandals, and it is said to come on foot to grant one wish.

The temple grounds, rich in nature, show seasonal beauty throughout the year, from fresh greenery in spring to autumn leaves and snowy scenery in winter. The approach has 80 stone steps, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes. Sermons are held about once an hour, and you can check that day’s start times on the official website.
