A magnificent waterfall with a drop of Approx. 64 meters and a width of Approx. 6 meters. Counted as one of Hida’s Three Great Waterfalls, it has also been selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls and one of Gifu Prefecture’s 50 Famous Waters. Located within Chubu Sangaku National Park, it offers beautiful nature-filled scenery in every season.

In early May, when snow still remains in the surrounding area, you can see a dramatic sight as large amounts of snowmelt crash powerfully into the basin below. From late May, fresh greenery spreads across the area, and by October, maples, beeches, and white birches turn red and yellow, covering the landscape in autumn colors. Then, in the severe cold of December, the waterfall freezes and giant icicles appear.

Every year from February 15 to 25, the Hirayu Otaki Ice Fall Festival is held, with the frozen waterfall illuminated and the entire area wrapped in a magical atmosphere. During the festival, the Nukutomari Bazaar is also held, where amazake and zenzai are served. Snow fireworks that light up the winter night sky are also part of the event.
