Mitake Plum Grove Park
One of Kitakyushu’s top spots, where Approx. 350 red and white plum trees bloom in full glory.
A park known as one of Kitakyushu’s leading plum blossom spots, where red and white plum blossoms bloom every year from mid-February to late March. It was once a tea garden belonging to nearby Goshouji Temple, and the park began when local residents planted plum trees to commemorate the marriage of Emperor Showa. In 1979, the city leased the land and opened it as a plum grove park.
The spring scenery is spectacular, with Approx. 350 red and white plum trees blooming across the slopes of the park’s Approx. 10,000-square-meter grounds. The area around the park, where bamboo groves spread out, is also nationally known as a producing area for high-quality bamboo shoots. The red and white plum blossoms standing alongside the lush green bamboo grove create an atmospheric scene with a distinctly Japanese feel.
Around peak season, from early to mid-March, stalls line the grove selling handmade farm products, including items made with plums harvested here, and the park bustles with visitors coming to enjoy the blossoms. If you use the local bus, you will need to walk for around 1 hour from the nearest bus stop, so getting here by car or taxi is recommended. Private paid temporary parking lots are also scheduled to open nearby only during plum blossom season.
