Tanemaki Gonbe no Sato
Experience the spirit of Gonbe in a satoyama garden where folk tales live on.
A spot honoring the virtues of Gonbe, the hero of the folk tale “Tanemaki Gonbe” passed down in Kihoku Town, Kitamuro District, Mie Prefecture, with a variety of attractions based on the theme of “flowers, greenery, and water.”
The main attraction is one of the largest Japanese gardens in Mie Prefecture. Designed in the traditional tsukiyama-rinsen-kaiyu style, it makes beautiful use of the natural mountain scenery around it.
In spring, Kawazu cherry blossoms and Somei Yoshino cherry trees add color, while in autumn, vibrant fall foliage creates an even more charming atmosphere. The garden’s large pond is filled with many leisurely swimming koi, and feeding them (for a fee) is also fun.
You should also stop by Gonbe Yashiki, which displays items connected to Gonbe. From folk materials from the Miyama area of Kihoku Town to many valuable exhibits, it offers plenty to see despite free admission. If you make a reservation in advance, you can also use the tea room inside the residence.
