Nakatajima Sand Dunes

One of Japan’s three largest sand dunes, known for its beautiful wind patterns and sunset views.

Last update :

Facing the Enshu Sea, the Nakatajima Sand Dunes are said to be one of Japan’s three largest sand dunes, stretching across Minami Ward in Hamamatsu City. They span Approx. 800 m east to west and Approx. 600 m north to south, with beautiful wind-shaped ripple patterns across the sand. At sunrise and sunset, the entire dune glows golden, highlighting the beauty of its natural formations. Its grand scenery has also been used as a filming location for many movies, TV dramas, and photo shoots.

From spring to summer, loggerhead sea turtles come ashore here to lay their eggs, and conservation efforts continue to protect this valuable breeding site, one of the few in the prefecture. Fireworks and litter threaten the turtles’ habitat, so please be mindful of the natural environment when you visit.

During the giant kite-flying event at the Hamamatsu Festival held in May, the nearby Enshunada Kaihin Park, Takoage Park serves as the venue, offering a chance to experience local traditions and the area’s unique character. Nearby are the Hamamatsu Festival Pavilion and Enshunada Kaihin Park, and the site is also easy to reach from central Hamamatsu. With gentle sea breezes and wide-open views, it’s a wonderfully refreshing place to visit.
