Hinokami Gorge

A spectacular scenic spot in Yame where a beautiful gorge of unusual rock formations and a lake comes together with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves.

Last update :

This gorge stretches Approx. 6 km and was formed by the erosion of volcanic rock. Sheer cliffs continue along the way, with striking giant rocks and unusual formations such as the over-10-meter-tall cliff face called “Shomen-iwa” and “Kehogi-iwa,” which is tied to a legend that a heavenly horse kicked a hole through it, creating a scene that looks like a Chinese landscape painting. The view from the red arch bridge “Kehogi Bridge” is especially popular, and the heart-shaped “Heart Rock” is also known as a power spot for love.

In spring, 1,000 cherry trees bloom in full splendor around the lakeside, making it a popular driving route along the gorge as well. In autumn, the rock faces and trees turn deep shades of color, and their reflections on the lake surface also glow red, letting visitors feel the changing of the seasons.

The area is also used as a leisure base for camping and strolling while taking in the grand scale of nature, where the lake, forest, and rock faces come together, offering a peaceful escape from the bustle of daily life.
