A gorge in Suzuka Quasi-National Park on the border of Mie and Shiga prefectures. The Ugagawa River, which flows from Mt. Ryugatake at an elevation of Approx. 1,100 m, eroded the granite over many years to create this dramatic landscape.

There are many waterfalls of various sizes throughout the gorge. Among them, Nagao Falls, located in the deepest part of the gorge, is especially popular for the beautiful blue color of its basin and its hidden-away atmosphere. Be sure to also visit Gosho Falls, which is relatively close to the parking lot, and Gokai Falls, known for its striking five-tiered shape.

The floral scenery is also a highlight, with delicate white shiroyashio flowers beautifully covering the slopes of Mt. Ryugatake. In fall, the leaves turn red, making it an especially vibrant season for enjoying autumn foliage.

If you want to take in these spectacular views at a relaxed pace, the Approx. 2-hour hiking course starting from the Ugakei Tourist Information Center and heading to Sunayama Observatory is recommended. From the observatory, you can enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding nature and even see Ise Bay in the distance. Along the trail, you can also encounter seasonal flowers throughout the year.

Highlights

  • As Ugakei Gorge is part of a quasi-national park, pets are not allowed, open flames are strictly prohibited, and taking home plants, animals, minerals, or other natural items is prohibited.
  • When hiking, be sure to submit a climbing registration form at the tourist information center.
  • This gorge was formed by the Ugagawa River flowing from Mt. Ryugatake as it eroded the granite. The Ugagawa River, whose water quality ranks in the highest category, stays cold throughout the year and is a very popular riverside play spot for families in summer.
  • Unique waterfalls are scattered throughout the area, including Nagao Falls, Gosho Falls, and Gokai Falls.
  • “Komorebi Sanpo,” a monthly guided walk with a nature observation instructor who explains the local plants and animals, is held every month. No advance reservation is required, so you can join casually. Check the official social media for details.
