Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel
Kiyotsu Gorge is a site of impeccable beauty, ranked as one of Japan’s “Three Great Gorges”. Carved by flows of the Kiyotsu River, the steep 100-meter high cliffs give way to stark rugged rock faces against emerald-green waters. The landscape’s unique look is thanks to magma flows some 5 million years ago that sculpted through all the drama and grandeur of natural uplifting and erosion.
Inside the tunnel, there are several observation spots and art installations scattered along the way, which made it feel like a fun little adventure. Even in summer, it's cool and comfortable inside. From the observation points, you can get an up-close look at the columnar joints of Kiyotsu Gorge, which is really impressive. There are also foot baths and hot springs outside, so I’d love to come back in the fall and try the hot springs too.
