Shonai Shrine
The cherry blossom tree-lined moat at Tsuruoka Park opens up to reveal Shonai Shrine, a coveted destination that was first established in 1877 by the people of Shonai to honor the former lords of the Shonai domain. Built on the former site of Tsurugaoka Castle's main enclosure, the shrine enshrines four of the domain’s historical lords. Since its founding, it has been affectionately referred to as "Jinja-han" by locals and remains a cherished spiritual center in the Shonai region.
Shonai Shrine is peaceful and beautiful all year round, but it's especially romantic during cherry blossom season. The shrine honors generations of feudal lords and is rich in history and culture. Definitely worth a visit!
