Oga Peninsula

In northwestern Akita, a peninsula rich in nature sticks out into the Japan Sea. It is known nationally for Namahage of Oga which was registered as an UNESCO iIntangible Cultural Heritage in 2018. Namahage of Oga is a traditional event that takes place in over 80 areas of Oga Peninsula on the new year’s eve.

The peninsula has a perfect coastline.
The hotel serves the famous stone-grilled fish soup, and it was incredibly fresh and delicious. The chef was amazing—moving the glowing hot stones around, and in no time a fresh, flavorful fish soup was ready.

Mt. Kanpu Revolving Lookout

355m-tall Mt. Kanpu is located at the back of Oga Peninsula. On top of the mountain, there is Mt. Kanpu Revolving Lookout. Elevation is not that high, but nothing blocks the view at that great scenic place.

The most charming thing about Mt. Kanpu is its lush green grassy slopes covering the whole mountain.

At the summit, the revolving lookout slowly turns 360 degrees, unfolding the magnificent scenery of the entire Oga Peninsula like a painting right before your eyes. That wide-open, unobstructed view really makes you feel refreshed and uplifted.

Tsurugajo Castle

The castle is a cherry blossom viewing spot and the symbol of Aizu Wakamatsu City. Its official name is Wakamatsu Castle, and it is also sometimes called Aizu Castle or Aizu Wakamatsu Castle. The castle tower, the only one in Japan covered with red tiles, preserves the beautiful appearance of the castle in the feudal era.

Tsurugajo Castle in Aizu-Wakamatsu is truly a fascinating old castle.
What makes it especially unique is that it’s the only castle keep in Japan that has preserved its red roof tiles.
It has a different charm in every season.
Cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, fall foliage in autumn, and snowy scenery in winter all make you want to come and experience the beauty of the four seasons.

Komatsu Airport

Komatsu Airport serves as the largest airport in the Hokuriku region from its perch in Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture. The airport offers convenient access to southern Ishikawa and northern Fukui, including Kanazawa and Fukui cities, and is also close to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Gassho-style villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama, making it a key gateway to the Hokuriku area.

I happened to come across a temporary fruit sandwich stand, and it was delicious.

On the second floor before security, there are some shops where you can shop and grab a meal. Some stores also offer tax-free service.

Toyama Castle (Toyama Municipal Folk Museum)

Toyama Castle was built during the Age of Civil Wars. Then, at the completion of the post-World War II reconstruction project, Toyama Industrial Expo was held, where this memorial was built. It models a three-layer and 4-story castle which is open to the public as a folk museum.

Toyama Castle at night has such a wonderful atmosphere.

Unlike its dignified, historic feel during the day, once night falls and the lights come on, the carefully designed modern lighting casts a soft, mysterious glow on its white walls, making it look like a crystal palace floating in the night.

Kaiwomaru Park

The sailing ship "Kaiwomaru," known as the "Lady of the Sea," is moored in this park. The park is also home to the Japan Sea Exchange Center, which displays models of sailing ships from around the world; the Bird Park, where about 150 species of wild birds can be observed throughout the four seasons; the "Green Pergola," a 180-m-long, 10-m-wide corridor; and Fureai Hiroba, a playground with a variety of equipment, including a large "Hammock of the Waves. On weekends, the park is crowded with families and couples enjoying a stroll.

The sails on Kaiwo Maru are usually furled. Only on certain dates between April and October do they fully open the sails, and it’s an incredibly spectacular sight. In July, there’s also a fireworks festival with special lighting, so you can enjoy a completely different view.

Deai Bridge

Deai Bridge is a 107-meter-long suspension bridge that leads to the Shirakawa-go gassho-zukuri village, a registered World Heritage site. The bridge connects the convenient public parking area, 'Village-Operated Sesaragi Park Parking Lot', to the village, and crossing the bridge brings you to the entrance of the village.

After walking across the bridge, it feels like passing through an invisible barrier, leaving the noise of the real world behind and stepping straight into a fairy tale. Even the little flowers by the roadside seemed to welcome our arrival.

Higashi Chaya District

It is one of Kanazawa's representative tourist attractions. The townscape with its beautiful Degoushi (latticed window) and the stone pavement has been selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the national government.

The meticulously pruned pine trees and pond water come together to create the ultimate Japanese garden aesthetic. Kenroku-en is so perfect, it’s genuinely breathtaking.

Across from Kanazawa Castle, separated only by an old moat, the two feel like the most perfect cultural pair in the historic city of Kanazawa.

Kanazawa Castle & Kenrokuen Four Seasons Tale

Known as the residence of the 14th generation of the Maeda family of the Kaga Clan, "Kanazawa Castle", and the large garden "Kenrokuen" constructed in its outer citadel, are representative tourist attractions of Ishikawa and Kanazawa. Kenrokuen is famous as one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan and has been designated as a special place of scenic beauty by the national government.

I finally got to visit during an evening opening, and it happened to coincide with firefly viewing.

Kenroku-en is usually closed to the public after dark. Only on a few special days in early summer each year do they hold firefly viewing nights.

It’s a rare opportunity, so if you ever get the chance, you should definitely go experience this special summer event at Kenroku-en.
