Takarazuka Revue, captivating audiences with its lavish stage sets, dazzling costumes, and polished singing and dancing, is one of Japan’s leading musical theater companies.
All performers are women, whether they play male or female roles.
Women who play male roles are called “OTOKOYAKU” and are portrayed with extra dignity and stylishness, while women who play female roles, known as “MUSUMEYAKU,” are portrayed with charm and beauty.
Its home base is Takarazuka Grand Theater in Takarazuka, Hyogo.
In this article, we introduce a 1-night, 2-day model theatergoing course centered on Takarazuka Grand Theater.
It is recommended not only for those who love theater, singing, and dancing, but also for anyone who wants to experience some of the very best entertainment Japan has created.
Please enjoy the world of Takarazuka Revue, which has continued to captivate audiences for more than 100 years.

Introduction: An Overview of Takarazuka Revue and Takarazuka Grand Theater

Takarazuka Revue was founded by Ichizo Kobayashi, the founder of Hankyu Railway, one of the major private railway companies in Kansai.
Its first performance was staged in 1914.

Takarazuka Revue began with Kobayashi’s desire to create a national theater that everyone, regardless of age or gender, could enjoy, and just as he envisioned, it has now become a form of entertainment with many fans not only in Japan but also overseas.
The greatest distinguishing feature of Takarazuka Revue is that all of its performers, or stars, are women.
Male roles are also played by women and are called “OTOKOYAKU”. Female-role stars are called “MUSUMEYAKU”.

About the Troupes

Takarazuka Revue performances are staged by troupe, with five troupes-Flower, Moon, Snow, Star, and Cosmos-as well as Senka, whose members do not belong to any single troupe and make special appearances in productions by the other troupes. Each troupe has a top star who takes the leading role and a top musumeyaku who performs opposite the top star.
Performances are basically presented as a two-part bill consisting of a play and a revue or show centered on singing and dancing.
The plays cover a wide range of genres, from original works to overseas musicals and adaptations of manga, films, and literature.
The revue or show is known for highlights such as the line dance, in which the performers lift their legs in perfect unison, and the finale, in which the top star appears wearing giant feathered wings.
Many people become fans after seeing just one performance.

Access to Takarazuka Grand Theater

Takarazuka Grand Theater is the home of Takarazuka Revue.
It is located in Takarazuka, Hyogo, about a 10-minute walk from the nearest station, Takarazuka Station.

When you leave Hankyu Takarazuka Station, bronze statues of stars greet you at Takarazuka Yume-hiroba.

Just knowing that you are about to see the Takarazuka Revue you have always admired is enough to fill you with excitement.
The promenade that continues beyond the shopping complex and leads to Takarazuka Grand Theater is called Hanano-michi.
Its streetscape resembles medieval Europe and feels perfectly in harmony with the grand theater.
In spring, the cherry blossoms here are especially beautiful in full bloom.
Seasonal flowers bloom along the way, and when this article was reported in February, violets, the flower that symbolizes Takarazuka Revue, were in bloom.
Various bronze statues connected with Takarazuka Revue can also be found along Hanano-michi.
Be sure to stop for commemorative photos.

Admission is 500 yen. The exhibition rooms are divided between the second and third floors, and on the second floor, in the Hall of Fame Zone, items associated with former stars and staff members who contributed to the development of Takarazuka Revue are on display.

*Please note that photography is not permitted on the second floor.

You can view the costumes up close and see the sequins, jewels, and other fine details that have been meticulously worked into them.
The costumes worn by the top stars are especially glamorous and magnificent. For every production, dedicated staff members carefully create them so that each performer’s individuality shines from every seat in the theater.

Costumes featuring the giant feathered wings that are one of Takarazuka Revue’s signature images are also on display.
Seen up close, they feel even larger, and you cannot help wondering how much they weigh.
It made me think about the skill of the stars, who dance so lightly while wearing wings of such size, and the tremendous effort that must have brought them there.

There is also a wonderful commemorative photo area in the third-floor exhibition room.
In front of the giant feathered wings, you can take a photo while holding shanshan, a signature prop of Takarazuka Revue.
Behind the wings is a set designed to resemble the grand staircase.
It truly makes you feel like a top star.

Before the performance, make sure to satisfy your appetite.
A recommended choice is Féerie, a Western-style restaurant that serves dishes inspired by Takarazuka Revue and the current production.
You can enjoy both meals and café service here. Because it is a popular restaurant, advance reservations online are recommended.
Here, you can enjoy set menus themed to the current production.

12:30-1:00 pm|Wait for the Doors to Open and Head to Your Seat

・Entrance Procedure

The theater opens about 30 minutes before curtain time.
Leave any large luggage in a coin locker, take your ticket, and line up in front of the ticket gate.

・Notes

There is no dress code at Takarazuka Grand Theater.
Enjoy the performance in whatever clothes you like.
However, inside the auditorium, be careful not to block the view of the people behind you by removing hats and avoiding high bun hairstyles.
It is also proper theater etiquette to turn off devices that make sounds or emit light during the performance, not to eat or drink, and to be considerate of those around you by refraining from speaking loudly.
Opera glasses are recommended because they let you see even the finest details of the stars’ expressions.
Opera glasses are also available to rent for a fee.
If you feel cold inside the theater, you can borrow a blanket.
It is also recommended that you use the restroom in advance.

1:00-4:00 pm|Watch a Takarazuka Revue Performance (The Main Event)

・Act 1: Play

At last, it is time for the main event: the performance itself.
Most Takarazuka Revue productions are presented as a two-part bill consisting of a play and a revue or show.
When this article was reported in February 2026, the production was performed by the Flower Troupe.

The play Grand Lament “A Chronicle of Waning Fortune” -A Vow at the Fall of the Heike- and the show Spicy Show “EL DESEO” were being performed.
Before the curtain rose, the sound of the orchestra tuning drifted up from the pit at the front of the stage, heightening the sense that the performance was about to begin.

The play in the first act is set in the late Heian period.
It depicts Taira no Tomomori, the fourth son of Taira no Kiyomori and the final commander of the Heike clan, portraying how he carried the shadow of his father and arrived at his final fate beyond vows and loss, as though it were a chronicle of life carved into the pale moon.
It was what is known as a Japanese-style play, one centered on a historical figure from Japan’s past.

A scene from Grand Lament “A Chronicle of Waning Fortune” -A Vow at the Fall of the Heike-
A scene from Grand Lament “A Chronicle of Waning Fortune” -A Vow at the Fall of the Heike-

At first glance, a historical story may sound difficult, but this was not the case at all, and the work was full of splendor.
Because it was a Japanese-style production, the sword-fighting scenes were powerful and executed with an impressively high level of quality, making for an extremely satisfying play.

・How to Spend the Intermission

When the first act ends, there is an intermission of about 30 minutes. During the break, I recommend getting one of the production-themed drinks at the Special Counter on the second floor.
This time there was an alcoholic cocktail based on soda syrup and a nonalcoholic drink based on craft cola syrup. Both were refreshing drinks.

Production-themed drinks
Production-themed drinks

There are also kiosks inside the theater selling light meals and the performance program.
The program is available only in Japanese except for the English synopsis pages, but it includes many photos of the cast, so why not pick one up as a souvenir of the performance.
There are also plenty of restrooms, so you can use them during the intermission.

・Act 2: Show

The second act shifts dramatically in mood from the first and becomes a Latin-style show.
Centered on singing and dancing, the second act featured not only original Takarazuka Revue songs but also familiar classical pieces, and the audience joined in with clapping, which made the excitement throughout the theater palpable.

A scene from Spicy Show “EL DESEO”
A scene from Spicy Show “EL DESEO”

Stars appear one after another, delivering breathtaking performances filled with story-driven scenes and dances set to distinctive music.
One of the biggest highlights is the Chu-zume sequence, when a large number of stars gather onstage and line up all at once on the apron stage known as Ginkyo, or the silver bridge, bringing the excitement to its peak.
In addition, the line dance, one of the signature features of Takarazuka Revue, is mesmerizing, with every leg raised at exactly the same moment and to the same height, the performers moving in perfect unison.

Line dance
Line dance

It is also striking how even the feathers on the costumes sway in complete synchronization whenever the performers move.
It made me think how many times more effort than I could imagine must have gone into reaching this stage.
This beauty of dance is another distinctive charm of Takarazuka Revue. Please experience it on a live stage for yourself.
Then, in the parade that brings the performance to its close, the grand staircase, one of the great symbols of Takarazuka Revue, appears.
This grand staircase is said to have 26 steps.

“Parade”
“Parade”

The sight of the stars gracefully descending the grand staircase without looking at their feet is truly wonderful.
The powerful impact of the giant feathered wings carried by the top star is also overwhelming.
This is Takarazuka.
With even the final bows perfectly in sync, the performance comes to an end while the excitement is still at its height.

4:00-4:45 pm|Time to Savor the Afterglow After the Performance

Before leaving the grand theater, take commemorative photos on the staircase in the lobby inside the ticket gate area and in front of the piano.

The piano automatically plays the theme song of the current production, and many people record it on video.
On the upper-left wall after you enter, panels featuring the main cast are lined up, creating another popular photo spot.

You can also turn the excitement you feel right after the performance into a letter and send it to a friend or your favorite star.
Takarazuka Grand Theater actually has its own post office, where you can mail a letter.
What is more, the postmark is different from an ordinary one, and it is a limited design that can only be obtained here at the grand theater.

Takarazuka Revue Post Office postmark

The design features a line dance. Because it changes a little each year, it is easy to see why people want to collect them.
Apparently, some people even mail letters to themselves just to collect these postmarks.

5:00-6:00 pm|Head to Takarazuka Hotel and Check In

If you still want to linger in the afterglow of Takarazuka Revue, I recommend staying at Takarazuka Hotel next to the grand theater.
This is the official hotel of Takarazuka Grand Theater. Its concept is “the dream continues.”
On the first floor, videos of Takarazuka Revue’s top-star duos are shown, allowing you to continue immersing yourself in its world.
On the second floor, there are also displays of costumes, props, and photographs actually used onstage in Takarazuka Revue productions.

One recommended room is the Deluxe Twin Revue Room.
It features decorations inspired by the troupe currently performing, displays of stage props, books related to Takarazuka Revue, and a magnificent chandelier.
And above all, it offers a theater view overlooking Takarazuka Grand Theater from the guest room window.
It truly allows you to feel Takarazuka Revue whether asleep or awake.

Another option is the Moderate Twin Revue Room.
Stage costumes and photos are displayed according to four different themes, and this room also offers a view of Takarazuka Grand Theater from the window.

6:30-8:00 pm|Dinner at Takarazuka Hotel

After checking in, enjoy dinner at one of the hotel’s restaurants.
For authentic French cuisine, the recommended choice is Buffet & Cafe Restaurant L'ensemble.
In the open kitchen, the chefs finish each main dish one plate at a time, which adds to the excitement.
After enjoying dessert and finishing a satisfying meal, it is time to say good night.

DAY2

10:00 am-12:00 pm|Transform Yourself at the Stage Studio

The next day, try visiting spots in Takarazuka Grand Theater that you have not yet explored.
There are still many experiences here that can only be had at Takarazuka Grand Theater.
One of them is stage makeup and costume photography at Salon de Takarazuka Stage Studio.
You can transform yourself into a star and have your photo taken.

The experience in progress
The experience in progress
The experience in progress

Because this is a very popular experience plan, advance reservations are required.
Reservations for the following month open on the first day of each month, but they fill up almost immediately because of its popularity.
As soon as you know you will be visiting the grand theater, it is best to book early.
Next to the entrance to the stage studio are panel photos of the costumes available for transformation.
You can choose your favorite from about 40 outfits.

(Costume photos will be mailed approximately one week later; please note that international shipping is not available.)

Choosing your costume from the panel photos
Choosing your costume from the panel photos

One of the most popular choices is the costume of Marie-Antoinette from The Rose of Versailles.
If you are torn between an otokoyaku role and a musumeyaku role, you can experience up to two costumes, so you can choose one otokoyaku costume and one musumeyaku costume and enjoy the differences in costume and makeup.
The experience lasts about two hours.
Up to two people can take part at the same time, so it is also recommended to go with a friend or family member.
Before having your stage makeup applied, you will need to remove your own makeup, so light makeup is recommended on the day of the experience.
Clothes that are easy to change out of are also a good idea.
You may feel tempted to go home wearing your stage makeup, but it must be removed before you leave after the experience.
Cleansing products and face wash are available to borrow, but there are no cosmetics for touching up your makeup, so be sure to bring your own makeup items.

There are also two other experience plans.
One is Short Stage, where you can have your photo taken wearing only the costume, without stage makeup.
This can only be experienced on the day if there is availability, and it takes about 30 minutes.

The other is Takarazuka Fantasy, where you can create a composite two-shot photo with a star.
You can choose which star and which production photo to use, as well as the shape of the frame.

After choosing the flower you will hold, you go into a small room and have about three photos taken.
Once the shoot is over, the finished result is ready in about 10 minutes.

You can, of course, have it made as a photo, but it can also be turned into a strap, keychain, or magnet.

12:00-1:00 pm|Lunch at Cafeteria Fleur

After enjoying the experience, have lunch at Cafeteria Fleur.
Here too, you can enjoy food available only during the current production.

This is the production-limited Revue Plate.
Its contents change with each production.
From appetizer to dessert, it is a dish that is perfect either before or after seeing a performance.
The Revue Plate served in February 2026 featured an exquisite combination of sweet-and-savory chicken and the acidity of tartar sauce made with shibazuke pickles.
It was also served with moon-shaped bread inspired by Grand Lament “A Chronicle of Waning Fortune” -A Vow at the Fall of the Heike-.

Another thing you should enjoy with your meal is the drink bar.
Syrups inspired by the troupe colors of Flower, Moon, Snow, Star, and Cosmos are available, and you can mix them with soda water to create drinks in troupe colors.

Because the drink bar offers unlimited refills, you can even try all of the syrups.
There are many different ways to enjoy it.
There are also flavored teas, juices, and coffee.

Afternoon tea is also available at Fleur.
It is a dessert set for two that includes six kinds of sweets, a vegetable quiche, and a mini dessert that changes with each production.
In February 2026, the Afternoon Tea Set Fleur Bonbons was 3,400 yen for two people, and the price included the drink bar for both guests.

In the center was a production-limited mini dessert named “Hakugetsusho.”
Because the current production was a Japanese-style work, it was a dish with a distinctly Japanese feel, topped with mitarashi dango.
It also included many other treats such as cheese tart, canelé, and matcha yokan with azuki beans.
