Okoshiki Coast
Discover a miracle of art shaped by the tides, where the beauty of Japan comes alive.
This coast is where the difference between low and high tide is especially visible in the Ariake Sea, which has the largest tidal range in Japan. It is said to have been named after an imperial palanquin (a sacred vehicle) carrying Emperor Keiko once stopped here.
At low tide, tidal flats stretch from the shore out to sea for at least Approx. 2 km, and the beautiful curves in the sand look like a sculpture created by a master artist. The crescent-shaped patterns formed by the natural forces of wind and waves are truly magical, captivating visitors with different hues depending on the time of day, from blue under clear skies to gold glowing in the moonlight.
Especially from February to May, low tide often comes at sunset, creating a breathtaking scene as the setting sun turns the landscape purple.
Recognized nationwide as a scenic spot worthy of pride, including selections for the 100 Best Sunsets and the 100 Best Beaches of Japan, it is well worth making the trip here for commemorative photos.
